  • Lawrence Community Bike Ride Saturday, July 16 — Fun for the Entire Family!

    Lawrence Central Rotary, LiveWell Lawrence, Ride Lawrence and a host of others present a FREE community bike ride Saturday, July 16th 2011 to promote cycling as a part of a healthy lifestyle at the The Rotary Arboretum at Clinton Park (by the YSC Soccer fields)

    9AM to 11AM
    Arrive early to register or download the registration forms below.

    Three Rides to choose from (all using trails)

    1. ONE MILE EASY LOOP
    2. THREE MILE FAMILY RIDE (To the Clinton Lake overlook and back)
    3. EIGHT MILE RIDE
    (To Langston Hughes Elementary (SAG stop) and back with an extension option to head out to 1-70 and back for a total of about 12 miles with SAG stop.)

    OTHER ACTIVITIES:

    TRAINING WHEEL TAKEOFF
    Experts help kids who are ready to take off their training wheels in a safe and fun environment
    SAFETY ZONE
    Safe Kids® will help facilitate bike-riding safety demonstrations and provide useful tips for riders and parents

    Helmets are required to participate.

    (there will be some available – so come out even if you do not own one)

  • Tour of Lawrence This Weekend

    This weekend! The Tour of Lawrence is a weekend of individual Pro-AM USA Cycling races,  children’s races/events & live music organized in partnership with Free State Racing and promoted and made possible by the Lawrence Convention & Visitors Bureau held July 1-3, 2011 in the city of Lawrence KS.

    The Lawrence Central Rotary is sponsoring the Kids Play Zone Friday night's Sprints at 8th and Mass and Sunday for the Crit at 9th and Mass.

  • Canadian physician and epidemiologist Bruce Aylward on eradicating Polio

    With the help of Rotary International Polio has almost been completely eradicated. But as Bruce Aylward says: Almost isn't good enough with a disease this terrifying. Aylward lays out the plan to continue the scientific miracle that ended polio in most of the world — and to snuff it out everywhere, forever.

  • “Ride Lawrence” Project Awarded Significant Achievement Award from Rotary District 5710

    At this year's District 5710 banquet Lawrence Central Rotary was awarded the Significant Achievement Award for our community service project: Ride Lawrence.


     

     

    Ride Lawrence's intention is to be a clearinghouse for bicycling information in the City of Lawrence and the Douglas County Kansas area.

    On July 16th we are also sponsoring a Community Bike Ride that will offer activities for every age and skill level, including a Training Wheels Take-off area for kids wanting to learn how to ride without training wheels.

    The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, at the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum. Several bicycling organizations have already volunteered to help with the event. Contact me if you would like to help or need more information (gbrenner@sunflower.com).

    Nikki King, executive director of the clinic, which provides health services for people in our community who don't have health insurance, cut the ribbon in an impromptu ceremony during the clinic's Health, Wellness and BBQ Bash this afternoon. (Note: the ribbon is duct tape.)

    Marilyn Hull, an avid biker, says that having a bike rack at a health clinic sends a good message.

    Marilyn Hull, program coordinator at the Douglas County Community Foundation and fearless leader ofLiveWell Lawrence, which provided funding to the Central Lawrence Rotary for its biking initiative, said it was fitting that a bike rack be located at Health Care Access, since it sends a good message about healthy living. In addition to the bike rack, part of the biking initiative is a website, RideLawrence.com, whose goal is to be a clearinghouse for bike info in Lawrence and Douglas County.

    The guy with the hat on in this photo is Larry Rankin, who planted this bike rack and made sure it's solid enough to be used by generations of Lawrencians. He's surrounded by members of the Central Lawrence Rotary (l to right): Jane Hueseman, Lynn O'Neal, Scott Wagner and Steve Lane. This is the third RideLawrence bike rack in town: No. 1 is at the Rotary Arboretum; No. 2 is at the Farmer's Market. Lane is organizing the Lawrence Community Bike Ride, a family ride scheduled for Saturday, July 16 at the Rotary Arboretum.
