LCR club member Cory Wallace reported on the community’s experience hosting the Algerian national soccer team for last summer’s World Cup games in Kansas City. As Director of Communications for the City of Lawrence, Cory had a unique opportunity to be a part of local planning and execution of events celebrating Lawrence’s selection to be a base camp for the Algerian team. The town embraced the experience with great enthusiasm and attended numerous fan events. Crop artist Stan Herd created a giant Algerian flag and the KU Band learned and performed the Algerian national anthem. People sported t-shirts made for the tournament and turned out in large numbers to support the team. Cory noted that the planning for the experience involved many entities but the real success was the organic response of the community. Cory and a number of community members, including representatives of the KU Band have been invited to visit Algeria later in the year,
