Lawrence Central’s membership is involved in many difference local and international causes, but one that is near and dear to our hearts is promoting bicycling in and around Lawrence and Douglas County Kansas.
We started by sponsoring a design competition for a new bike rack for the Lawrence Arts Center. From there more racks followed. They now can be also used at the Saturday Farmer’s Market location, the Rotary Arboretum, Van Go, and Health Care Access. Our latest bike rack was recently unveiled at the new facility for Theatre Lawrence.
We applied for a grant from Live Well Lawrence and with those funds, we sponsored the first Lawrence Community Bicycle Ride. It was a great success and we plan to continue to sponsor and grow the event.
We’ve also started the Ride Lawrence website that can be an aggregator of bicycling information for Lawrence and Douglas county. We post local events and stories about local and interesting bicycling information. We are always looking for contributors, so if you’d like to be a part of our Ride Lawrence team email us.
We also are working behind the scenes to promote and lobby for more bike lanes through “Complete Streets” when the city works on streets.
If this is interesting to you feel free to come to a meeting and see if Rotary might be in your future!
